It shouldn’t be a surprise that Colorado has an abundance of trails, parks, and open spaces to explore. Did you know some of the best places to hike are here in Fort Collins? It’s true—you can mountain bike, walk, run, sightsee to your heart’s content at the many trails scattered just outside of the city. Just a few of the best trails in Fort Collins are:
- Horsetooth Rock. This is by far a must-see when you come to Fort Collins. The hike is considerably moderate, but doable for most people. The views are exceptional, to say the least. However, due to its popularity, the trails (and parking) can get a little crowded, especially on the weekends.
- Arthur’s Rock Trail. Comparable to Horsetooth, Arthur’s Rock is located in Lory State Park and features several hiking, running, and horse trails. The peak rewards hikers with phenomenal views of Horsetooth Reservoir, the front range, and the majestic Rocky Mountains.
- Hewlett Gulch Trail. This trail is a hidden side canyon just off the main Cache la Poudre River Canyon. You’ll expect to stumble upon several springs and waterfalls.
If you have exhausted all of the trails and you’re looking for something new to explore, Fort Collins has plenty to offer. The city is a short 45-minute drive away from Rocky Mountain National Park, and you can access it without the daunting traffic that Denver and Boulder brings.
Once summer arrives, be sure to plan a day (or a few) to head to Horsetooth Reservoir. Don’t have a boat? No problem. You can rent kayaks or paddle boards and spend the day relaxing on the water soaking up the sun and basking in the serenity of Horsetooth Reservoir.
After you’ve spent the day outdoors, you’re going to want to reflect on your adventures while sipping a Colorado craft brew and snacking on something delicious. Downtown Fort Collins, known as Old Town to locals, is not short of breweries, restaurants, bistros, and pubs. After all, Colorado is home to nearly 400 craft breweries, with a large portion of that number residing in northern Colorado. New Belgium Brewing Company and Odell Brewing are just a few of the big-name breweries that call Fort Collins “home”. But there are so many more micro-breweries that are well worth visiting. While driving throughout the city, you’re sure to spot a brewery on nearly every block. If beer isn’t your thing, distilleries are making an appearance and, of course, Colorado is putting their spin on it with craft spirits and one-of-a-kind cocktails. Ready to eat? Don’t settle for chain restaurants—not while you’re in Fort Collins, anyway. There is a wide variety of local restaurant options that truly make Fort Collins a special place to live.
