Quick Tips for Outdoor Holiday Decorating

Snow has fallen here in Northern Colorado, and most of us are looking forward to the holidays, beginning with Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving being early this year, some of us are starting to think of Christmas and the holiday decorating which goes along with the season. Mountain-N-Plains Inc, Northern Colorado’s leading real estate management company, serving Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, and the surrounding areas, offers up tips for outdoor holiday decorating.

  • If you are renting your home, make sure you get the property owner’s permission before hanging lights and installing other holiday decorations around your home. The homeowner may not be a fan of huge, blow-up characters taking up the entire front yard — nor may the neighbors who complain to the homeowner.
  • If you’re a homeowner, make sure your holiday decorations comply with any homeowner association restrictions on holiday decorations. Some HOAs limit how long you can have holiday decorations up: 30 days before and after the holiday.
  • If you’re a renter or a homeowner, you need to be familiar with local ordinances, which includes, city, county, and state laws. For example, light pollution is a big concern and is frequently prohibited. Holiday lights that blink or shine brightly can cause disturbances, requiring you to turn off the lights by a certain time, so the neighbors aren’t disturbed. The last thing you want is to spend a lot of money on holiday decorations you can’t use.
Keep your holiday decorations and lights on your property. It’s rude and illegal to have your snow globe half on your neighbor’s property. Expect a complaint if it’s too egregious.
  • If you live in a condominium or apartment, be aware decorations are limited to your door and/or patio or balcony area. It’s a safety hazard to have holiday decorations in common areas such as hallways or by the elevators.
